Butterfly Haven Provides Support and Love
Every child deserves to feel cared for and thought of, and Butterfly Haven strives to meet the needs of children in a thoughtful, personal way that will make a lasting impact.
When Butterfly Haven is notified of a child who is transitioning to foster care, a care bag is assembled for that child that includes things like toiletries, coloring books, a stuffed animal, any other things depending on the age of the child. These items come in a suitcase or backpack, so the child knows that anything in that bag goes with them no matter where they end up. This is one of many ways Butterfly Haven strives to help each child feel safe and secure.
Butterfly Haven fills an important need in the community by equipping foster families so they can focus on the children in their care.
Taking a whole-family approach, the organization provides a network of support to foster and adoptive families by connecting individuals and offering resources that will help these families navigate licensing agencies and state requirements. In addition, Butterfly Haven helps to connect families in crisis by connecting individuals who need crisis care for their children to those who can provide care.
As children with medical needs are placed with foster families, many times their medical equipment or prescriptions do not transition with them. Because of insurance regulations, this usually means that a foster family will need to pay out of pocket to provide the tools or medication needed by the child.
“Imagine for a moment that you are suddenly called on to care for a child with diabetes, but all of this child's medication has already been filled for the month and none of it was sent with the child. To complicate things further, insurance won't cover the cost of filling a new prescription. Sometimes, the medication or equipment needed costs hundreds of dollars, or more.” —Maria Larsen, Executive Director of Butterfly Haven, Inc.
In these situations, the organization provides things like clothing, food, and other daily needs to offset the cost of living so foster families can hopefully afford medications needed. If equipment is needed, Butterfly Haven is sometimes able to find someone who can donate used equipment or the organization already has the equipment on hand from a previous donation.
The organization also provides things like beds, dressers, clothes, shoes, coats, and other items for children as they are placed in a new foster situation or as they go back home.
The goal is to ease the transition by taking away some of the worry out of meeting the physical needs of the child so the child and parent can focus on getting home, settled, and bonding. Moments like these matter. The less chaos, the better it is for the child.
“. . .Butterfly Haven has provided resources and a network of foster families with much more experience that have proven to be very valuable.”
“They (those involved in Butterfly Haven) helped me be a better parent by educating me about common issues with the children in my care.”
“The encouragement has been phenomenal. I do not think I would have made it this far or long without them.”
"Butterfly Haven gives me a sense of belonging. No one understands our struggles the way other foster parents do.”
